Tin Man Costume

While playing the Tin Man in a production of The Wizard of Oz, I was invited to help design and make my own costume. The director wanted the Tin Man Dorothy encounters in Oz to visually echo his Kansas counterpart, a farmer. We kept the farmer's overalls as part of the costume, carried details from his workman's hat into the funnel-hat design, and shaped the metalwork to make the Tin Man feel as though he had been assembled from a farm tool. The result was a practical, articulated costume made to move and perform onstage.
